Bourne & Hollingsworth
We all know the phrase, ''Don't judge a book by it's cover'' - well, the same can be said of Restaurants too!
From the outside, B&H in Clerkenwell looks like an uninviting building, what with it's black painted exterior. But the moment you step inside, it's a completely different story - kind of like the one where four siblings walk through an old wardrobe and step into a snow-covered wintery landscape; except this three-storey story is like stepping into Spring itself. Plus, there's no White Witch here. Just plenty of white-washed walls and floors.
The decor of flora and fauna, coupled with the wicker chairs and other 'Colonial Summerhome' style furniture, reminded me of Rudyard Kipling for some reason, or at least what could have been the residence of a British Botanist from the Victorian era.
Bourne & Hollingsworth was the place that I met up with a friend from Uni, whom I hadn't seen in ten years! We caught up over what was quite possibly the best Brunch I've had in a long while.
Whenever I brunch, my go-to food is a sweet stack-o-pancakes. However, I decided to opt for the savoury courgette pancakes that were on the B&H menu, and I'm glad I did. With each bite, I was treated to a melt-in-the-mouth buttery yet light crumbly texture, tightly packed with roasted tomatoes and red onions, topped with a caper dressing. If I close my eyes, even now, I can still taste those pancakes!
It was FULL of flavour, yet delicately spiced.
We couldn't leave without something sweet to mark our reunion! Being the only dessert on the menu, we ordered the Brownie without ice-cream. Brownies are easily a hit or a miss with me - it's got to be 'cakey' in consistency, with a slight chew. This Brownie gets full marks from me, especially because it was drenched in a decadent chocolate sauce.
Although it was fairly busy and quite noisy, we were well looked after by the waiting staff. The only one downside is that the ladies toilets were terribly filthy. Clean toilet facilities really do make a difference to the overall dining experience!
Bourne & Hollingsworth is a popular place for socialising, drinking and brunching, so bear this in mind when making a trip here on the weekend. All in all, a charming find in a quiet corner of Clerkenwell, London.
